In Our Home: Book Ownership
We do whatever we can to encourage our children to think very positively about book ownership. They are beginning to get a kick out of building their own libraries, so we always give special books for birthdays and Christmas. Whenever we get new books, we spend a long time handling, admiring, and talking about them. The kids naturally let us know which ones they want to read first without our prompting. We will sometimes talk up a really good book, but hold off reading it for awhile. We’ll save it for a rainy day, or for a trip, or as a reward for finishing a project. By the time we get to reading it, everyone is champing at the bit. And, of course, library day is a big deal. I think we hold the record for most books checked out in a single visit! And it’s all for the love of books.
